ADMISSIONS

The Home recognizes the difficulty in taking the decision to move into residential care. However, placement is often necessary for the applicant’s safety, security and physical or mental well being. We encourage and advise families and/or the prospective resident where possible to begin the application procedure before a crisis situation arises. Highlands House is not a hospital facility. Therefore, we are unable to accommodate emergency placements. The admissions procedure is co-ordinated by the Social Worker Manager. Support and counselling is available to the prospective resident and family. We encourage people to remain in the community as long as possible.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Elderly persons, male and female, aged 60 years and over
  • Physical and/or mental frailty requiring care
  • The existence of social criteria, such as financial need, isolation and no support system

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

To cover the administrative costs of the admission R150 is payable, non-refundable. Application forms can be obtained by mail, personal collection, or via the website.
If the prospective applicant resides in Cape Town, after the completed application forms are received, a home visit is soon conducted. The purpose of the visit is to assess the individual’s care needs and ascertain the level of care. This determines where they will reside in the home.

The assessment is based on the skills of daily living such as washing, eating patterns and mobility and establishes the amount of care required. This in turn determines the monthly tariff. The prospective resident and/or family representative is then requested to attend 2 meetings, one to discuss the financial arrangements, another with the Admissions Committee to finalize the application and sign the relevant documentation. The availability of a suitable room determines the waiting period for admission.
